Tips for Storing your RV for Winter

As winter approaches, it’s crucial to prepare your recreational vehicle (RV) for the colder months to ensure it stays in top condition and is ready for your next adventure. Proper winter storage involves more than just parking your RV; it requires a series of steps to protect it from the harsh elements and prevent damage. Investing time in winterizing your RV can save you from expensive repairs and help you hit the road faster in spring.

RV Winter Storage Tips

The following are some key tips to help you rvstore your RV properly for winter:

  • Clean thoroughly. Start by giving your RV a thorough cleaning, both inside and out. Remove any food items to avoid attracting pests. Clean the refrigerator, cabinets and all surfaces. Don’t forget to wash the exterior and apply a protective wax coating.
  • Drain and winterize plumbing. An essential step is to drain all water from the plumbing system to avoid freezing and potential damage.
  • Protect the battery. Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Keep it charged periodically to prevent it from dying. If you leave the battery in the RV, disconnect it to avoid any drain.
  • Cover and ventilate. Invest in a high-quality RV cover to protect it from snow, ice and UV damage. Ensure the cover is breathable to prevent moisture buildup. Keep vents slightly open to promote air circulation and prevent mold and mildew.
  • Check the seals and roof. Inspect the roof, windows and doors for any cracks or leaks. Reseal any areas that need attention to prevent water from seeping in during the winter months.
  • Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure. Consider using tire covers to protect them from the elements. If possible, move the RV periodically to prevent flat spots.
  • Keep rodents out. Seal any gaps or openings where rodents could enter. Use rodent repellents or traps inside the RV to keep pests at bay.
